Teresa - You are exactly correct, my fingers did get excited and typed in the wrong date of birth for Moses. Moses, Sr. was born about 1737 in Lunenburg Co., VA, son of John Cockerham and mother unknown. He migrated to Surry Co. in 1771 with his brother, William, and his nephew, David. David was the son of his deceased brother, John, Jr. In 1780 Moses received a land grant from the state for land on Little Fiosher River, east of Round Peak Mountain. during the next 20-25 years he appears on many deeds. It appears that buying and selling land was his occupation. He is said to have had 7 children, but I have only documented 3, Moses, Jr.; James; and Susanna, so there is a VERY good chance that your William is his son. The birth dates for Moses, Jr. 1770 approximately, James 1782 and Susanna 1784, leaves a wide span of years for the births of other children. In his will probated February 25, 1816, he mentions wife, Elizabeth; son Moses to have the grist mill until William Anderson Cockerham is of age. William Anderson was the son of his deceased son, James. Daughter Susanna Auberry. My William was the son of Moses, Jr. and was born circa 1815. The brother William who came from Lunenburg to Surry with Moses left Surry Co. and died in Morgan County, Georgia. The only child I have found for him is Matthew. His nephew David was born Nov. 15, 1763 in Lunenburg Co, Married Mary Ann Burch in Surry Co. in 1790 and died May 26, 1856 in Surry Co. David also served in the Revolutionary War in place of his Uncle William. Thanks for the info. Keep me updated. It has been a good while since I worked on my Cockerhams, so I have to go back and refresh the memory occasionally. Betty Pilson
