Have just started researching one of my maternal lineages. My 2ggrandmother was Basheba Masters married to William Burris in 1830, Jackson Co., MO, born in 1811 in N.C. & died in 1885 in SLC. I have suspected for some time her father was William Masters, and if it is the one listed on the Jackson Co., MO 1830 census he was born in VA & an 1850 census in Henderson Co.,TX give his age as 68. No wife listed then. After reading posted family research on the Ancestry & Rootsweb sites, it appears there is a possibility that Basheba's mother may be Margaret Cockerham. A Margaret Cockerham married a William Masters on 30 Nov.1807 in Surry, NC. Can't find out what happened to her. The mother of the William I mentioned above was likely named Barsheba Barrier. This would fit name-wise, and also with a sibling named Margaret. Basheba, Barsheba probably variations of Biblical Bathseba. The name carries in my Burris line . I also noted that one Humphrey Cockersham, in Wilkes NC married a Barsheba Masters, and I wondered if she might be a sister of William Masters, due to his mother's name. Haven't found out her parents names. From there the research seems to go in various directions for both the Masters and Cockerhams. I have done quite alot of research in Virginia, so I know it is difficult back further to find authentic & clear data in some counties but alot of Gen. societies have great compilations. I also know that many moved from the Shenandoah Valley and central VA to N.C.to re-settle. Haven't done much digging in NC yet. I take it that the name Cockerham has been also spelled Cochran, among other variations. Any assistance or clues would be most appreciated, and I thank you! The postings made here have been very interesting, too. Audrey Honegger Notify Administrator about this message?
