Above were my GGGrandfather Joseph Crew and GGGGrandmother Mary A Crew and both are shown in the 1871 Census of England and Wales as living in Middlesex (Paddington / St Marylebone area of London). Joseph was married to Frances nee Phelphs or Philphs. The census shows that my GGrandfather (also Joseph) was living at home aged 24. Both Josephs were stonemasons and it is believed they worked on Euston Station, the son Joseph later becoming an extremely wealthy stone merchant, though sadly dying prematurely from Brights Disease at the age of 47 in 1894. GGGrandfather Joseph Crew and GGGGrandmother Mary A Crew were both born in Wimborne, Dorset and I am searching for their roots in this area. It appears that there are a number of Crew families in Dorset and with Dorset's famous Portland Stone, it is not surprising that some of the Crew males became stonemasons. Joseph Crew from Wimborne was born about 1822, although other records have suggested erroneously 1831 (Quite impossible as he would had to have fathered his son at 9!!) His mother Mary A Crew was born in 1802, although the same erroneous record suggests 1822, another impossibility! It has taken many years to establish the Dorset connection and I would welcome gratefully any information about the Dorset Crew Family from whom I have descended.
