I am trying to track my ggg grandmother, Lydia Crews. She was born about 1800 in South Carolina. She married William West. Unfortunately, they had only one son, Madison West. I believe my best clue lies in the new presence of Penelope Crews (Cruse) with young son Charles W.C. in the household of William and Lydia Crews West in 1850, Rapides Parish, La. She is present in the West household with no spouse. That same year as their new neighbor is found Nathaniel Bryan(t) and his wife Cynthia and they have young children, born in Florida. The following census finds Nathaniel Bryant and family back in Florida, in Suwanee, and Penelope married to a Locklear, also in Florida. There are inconsistencies through the years as to the surname of her eldest son Charles, and ultimately you finally see him bearing the name Locklear along with the other children in the household; there are inconsistencies as well regarding Penelope's age. I think that my Lydia Crews is likely an elder daughter to one of the sons of Alexander Crews, Sr, or an elder daughter of Alex Crews, Jr., based on the presence of Penelope Crews and her young son, Charles W.C., in their household in 1850 Rapides Parish, La. A few of the sons of Alex Crews, Jr. named daughters,Lydia. I believe this presence of Penelope in their household has been likely overlooked by everyone as the spelling of name was transcribed as Crose. Further, there is an Ann Crews, possibly Jane Ann Crews, I'm working on confirming that (the Jane), who married Eli Smith (son of Jeremiah Smith and JoAnna Dillon) in Pike County, Miss. The Smiths were from Lancaster, SC and moved between Miss and SC apparently with some regularity early in the 1800's. There is a connection between this Ann Crews, b. 1809, and my Lydia Crews as Ann's eldest daughter, Martha Jane Smith, moved to Rapides Parish, LA upon her marriage to a Collins, and lived very close to my Lydia Crews West and husband,William West. They are also all buried in the same very small old Cemetery in La. If any of this info on these two Crews women should ring a bell with you, please let me know. I think the pattern of Nathaniel Bryan (t) movements are significant to the story. As you may know the Bryants of SC also had a fairly strong presence in Florida, and it's apparent that he is of the family of Bryants that were socially intertwined it appears with the Crews family. My first instincts were that Lydia was an elder sister of Penelope Cruse, why else would she take her in? But of course she could be her aunt as well. I really think that locating the Crews family my Lydia comes from will lead me to determining which West line in South Carolina my West's come from. William and Lydia were married in SC and their son, Madison West, was born there as well in 1824. Many thanks, Jimmie West Notify Administrator about this message?
