Dear Elizabeth,
You've evidently changed your e-mail address. You once sent me a scan of Eliza James Crockett and some younger members of her family. Ever since receiving it, I've been thinking of it, consciously or unconsciously, trying to work out the identities of the people therein.

It's my opinion that the picture had to have been taken between 1865 and 1873 I Kind of think 1867 but would agree to 1870.

Recently I saw someone else's IDs, and they were more or less the same as the IDs you had, with one slight difference. The three younger girls were all identified as Hays children. All three of these children do have the same eyes, don't you think? I tend to agree with this, although I think the identifier got the names out of order. We can discuss that if you're interested.

I'm writing you about the identity of the man. I think I mentioned to you that I thought this man might be David W. Crockett, ElizaJames Crockett's son, since three of Eliza's daughters, Elizabeth Ellen, Mary Jane, and Sarah Mahala, were in the picture, & he was the right age. But I was keeping an open mind that it could also be brothers James or Joseph, either of whom was still living in the Franklin Co. MO area.

But I've been bothered that, although this "Unknown Man" resembles a more youthful picture I have of David W. Crockett, he doesn't seem to have the sharper features of the older pictures you & David Ryan sent me of David W. Crockett. And now I'm thinking about this other possibility: Mary Jane Crockett was married by now and living in Lebanon, MO. And in fact, maybe the picture was made in Laclede Co. before Eliza & family moved to Franklin Co. I don't know the year they moved, do you? I thought it was soon after Eliza's husband Joseph died in 1863, but the Franklin land grant wasn't issued to Eliza until 1873. So this reflects a brand new question! Anyway, Mary Jane was present in the picture, so maybe her husband was present too. I looked at a picture Dave provided of Mary Jane Crockett and her husband Aulsey (do you have that?) and I do see a resemblance between Aulsey Ivey and the unidentified man in The Picture. What do you think?

By the way, after seeing a photo of Sarah Mahala Crockett & her husband, Wesley Wright (provided by Dave), I have a slightly different take on the identities in said picture. Would you like me to share my ideas?
Elinore
