I found a better image stored on my other computer of the DAR application that I referred to in my last message & printed it -- it's not the best, but I can read it well enough to give you more information & even references to the original records:

1) James Southall's will that was recorded in 1801 (Amelia Co., VA Will Book 6, pg 220) names his 3 grand daughters Elizabeth, Rebecca, and Mary Crowder [and other heirs].

2) Amelia Co., VA Order Book 1827-1828, p 35, there was a "suit brought by: Elizabeth Crowder, Jessie Coleman and wife Elizabeth, late Elizabeth Crowder; Wesley A. Tucker and wife Mary late Mary Crowder; James Coleman and wife Rebecca, late Rebecca Crowder; Levi B. Crowder; John Tanner and wife Ann, late Ann Crowder Grief Tally and Frances his wife, late Frances Crowder in their proper persons and Martha Crowder, Cynthia Crowder and William J. Crowder, infants by [Ellet] Young their next friend against Peter Burton, administrator of Herod Tucker Crowder decd.
"Commissioners appointed to settle the estate of Herod Tucker Crowder: Armistead Coleman, George Kidd and Henry H. Southall. July Court, 1827"

That was the proof given and accepted by the DAR that a Ms Southall, daughter of James Southall, married Herod Tucker Crowder & had (at least) 3 daughters -- Elizabeth, Rebecca and Mary Crowder.

The DAR application also notes that Herod Tucker married Frances Burton, 25 May 1795, Security John Southall; and Elizabeth Smith, 1 Sep 1810, Security Thomas Neal; according to "Amelia County records".

Although I have looked at these families a zillion times, I never realized that the Wesley A. Tucker that married Mary Crowder was the step-son of John Southall (son of James d. 1801) who married Frances. The DAR application notes a few more records to prove this:

"Proof that Frances Southall was the mother of Wesley A. Tucker: I, John Southall and Frances my wife both of Amelia County, to Archer Coleman as trustee for Wesley Anderson Tucker, infant, for the benefit of sd. Wesley A. Tucker my son etc. --- at 21 years." Dated Mar ?3?, 1806, recorded 22 Jul 1813, Amelia Co., VA Deed Bk 23, pg 627.

The will of Wesley A. Tucker, dated April 19, 1847, recorded 17 May 1847 in Dinwiddie Co., VA (Book 4, page 186) names his son William Henry Tucker, daughter Louisa F. Watts, son John ?W.? Tucker, daughter Elizabeth Thacker, daughter Mary ?H.? Tucker, daughter ?Areadney? E. Tucker & mentions his mother.

The will of Frances Southall, dated 19 Aug 1850 in Dinwiddie Co., VA (Book 4, page ?5?30 names her "granddaughter ?Ariadne? E. Tucker; ?Emma? W. Watts the daughter of Josiah and Louisa F. Watts; my three granddaughters, Louisa F. Watts, Elizabeth A. ?E.? Thacker and ?Ariadna? E. Tucker." The executor was William H. Tucker.

Thus, John Southall (son of James) who died in 1813, Amelia Co., VA married Frances [maiden name unknown] Tucker, mother of the Wesley Anderson Tucker who married James Southall's granddaughter Mary Crowder.

Hope that helps --

Susan :)
