Mary Cruise was born around 1841 in New Jersey, according to Louisville KY census records. [Further research MIGHT show her to be Mary, the daughter of Matthew and Rosanna Cruise of Newark NJ. Both born in Ireland, according to the Newark 1850 and 1860 censuses. In 1860 Matthew was a policeman, b ca 1815.]
Around 1859, place not known, Mary married Dillon Mapother, and had six children by him. He reportedly died around 1874, and she married in Louisville on 28 Feb 1876 Thomas O'Mara, who was born in Tennessee or Kentucky around 1835. He was a druggist, and appears to have had at least three children by previous marriages.
On 29 Dec (or Jul) 1876 Thomas O'Mara (Jr.) was born in Louisville. Sometime before 1900 his name was changed to Thomas Cruise Mapother. Actor Tom was reportedly born Thomas C. Mapother IV, and it has been claimed that he changed the spelling from Cruse to Cruise. Cruse may be the spelling used by some census takers, but "Cruise" appears on the WWI draft registration card of Thomas C. Mapother I.

Immigration records show Dillen Mapother, engineer, age 18, arrived in New York City 2 Jan 1850 from Liverpool aboard the ship "Wisconsin". His place of origin was listed as Ireland, and most census records list his birthplace as Ireland.

The book "Finding Your Famous (and Infamous) Ancestors", by Rhonda McClure, available at Amazon.com, is said to contain some of Tom Cruise's ancestry. I haven't seen this book yet, and don't know whether it outlines Mary Cruise's ancestry.
