Please read, Callahan could equal Cullinan. My Great Grandfather as far as I know is a CULLINAN. If anyone has Cullinan's that fit along the line mentioned below just email me.
Jeremiah Callahan came into Boston, Mass. in 1842. He made his way up to Cumberland County, Maine and married Catherine Burke in Portland, Maine on Feb. 11, 1849. The 1850 Census showed Jeremiah as Jeremiah Calen and residing in Falmouth, Maine. Jeremiah was listed as 30 years old in 1850. Living with Jeremiah was a Denis Calen age 24 and most likely a brother. Jeremiah and Catherine had one daughter named Margaret age 7 months.
The 1860 Federal Census Shows Jeremiah as Jerry Callihan born 1818 (age 42) and living in Florida, Massachusetts. He was employed in Hoosiac Tunnel. Listed as family members were Catherine his wife, Daughters Margaret age 10, Catherine age 8, Mary age 6, Sons John age 5, and Timothy age 2. The three girls were born in Maine. In Feb. 1861 Jeremiah became a US Citizen. His Natualization Papers show that he came from County Cork. Ireland and he was born June 1823. One of the witnesses was a Daniel Callahan from North Adams and Daniel was also from County Cork. Daniel in 1870 was listed as being born in 1840 so he could have been a younger brother or a cousin.
The 1870 Federal Census still shows Jeremiah in Florida, Massachusetts and he is identified as Jeremiah Callahan. Listed in the house are Catherine his wife, Children Margaret age 20, Catherine age 18, Mary age 17, Timothy age 12, Ellen age 10, and Bridget age 4. Also the following boarders were living with Jeremiah: Eugene Callahan age 21,
Patrick Callahan age 24, John Callahan age 23, Patrick Callahan age 18, and Mary Callahan age 18. The younger Patrick age 18 is my Great Grandfather but the last name is actually CULLINAN/CULLINANE.
In between the 1870 and 1880 Census my Great Grandfather Patrick CULLINAN married, had a son, and died in an accident while working in the Hoosiac Tunnel. In North Adams after the Tunnel was open my Great Grandfather Patrick CULLINAN Married on June 15, 1876 to Mary Hanley. The marriage record has him as Patrick CALLAHAN. On June 8, 1879 my Grandfather John E. Cullinan was born and his baptism record has him as John E. Cullinane and shows the father as Patrick Cullinane. Four months later on October 2, 1879 Patrick my Great Grandfather died in the tunnel. Patrick is listed in the death records as Patrick Callihan and his listed in the 1880 Mortality Schedule as Patrick Callihan.
The 1880 Federal Census shows Jeremiah as Jerry Callihan
and he is now residing in North Adams, Massachusetts. My Great Grandmother Mary (Hanley) Cullinan and my Grandfather John E. Cullinan are also shown with the last name of Callihan. Jeremiah Callahan died in 1884 in North Adams, Massachusetts and on his death record it list the father as Timothy.
It was in 1907 When Mary (Hanley's) second husband died that a deposition was signed by the family to correct the error on Patrick's death in 1879. That error was changing the last name from Callihan to CULLINAN.
I believe that Jeremiah was an Uncle to my Great Grandfather Patrick Cullinan aka Callahan/Callihan. I believe that Jeremiah and Patrick's father Michael were brothers and there is at least one other brother named Denis who appeared in the 1850 in Falmouth, Maine.
Does anyone recognize this Jeremiah or have information on this Jeremiah Callahan who could be a CULLINAN. Likewise my Patrick CULLINAN could actually be a CALLAHAN.
In County Cork the name Cullinane is pronouced as
Coo li nhan. It is possible if the "n" in nhan was not pronounced then it could have been mis-understood as
Coolihan and then translated to Callihan/Callahan.
