From my understanding, the name is sourced form the Danish 'By' meaning place or farm or cottage, and 'Dal' meaning dell or vale. So it would be cottage in the dell or place in the valley, or something like that.
All the Norse people travelled about, so it could be Sedeish, Danish or Norwegian. There are places in Sweden and Denmark, only a few kilometres apart named 'Dalby' and the name is so simple and descriptive it could be that it could have been generated from all of the above at different time.
