William Ransom Davis married second to Martha Cantey in 1791. I have a copy of a letter written by William's son, Warren Ransom Davis, dated 28 April 183? (1832 I think - it's unclear). He was a congressman at the time. The original is in a private collection, so I don't believe I should quote from it, but the gist of the genealogy I believe would be okay to provide. Warren staes that he is the son of William Ransom Davis whose father emigrated from Gloucester County, Virginia to the High Hills of Sumter in South Carolina when General Sumter was still alive (Sumter died in abt. 1832 at age 98 and had come to Eutaw Springs S.C. between 1762 & 1766). William's sisters are named as Betsy and Nancy, both were still alive. One of them had married Mr. Harris (or Harry Hunter ?)and lived in Alabama. The other had married Wm B?y and lived in Columbia, South Carolina. Apparently there was a 3rd sister, as Warren states that General Harrison married the other sister and they were both deceased about 40 years. Warren states that his father was 1st married to Miss Norval and there were 2 children - John N. Davis and Leonora Davis, now Leonora Spann (? I've seen on the web where some say it's Spann and others say Spain). Despite the statement of 2 children, he states that the 3rd son was named after himself i.e. William Ransom Davis, and he had died in 1813 as a Captain in the US Army, in Mississippi. Warren then says his father became a widower and in 1791 married Warren's mother, Martha Cantey, daughter of John Cantey who lived on the N. side of Sumter River a few miles below Nilson(?) ferry. They had three children. Warren was the eldest; Doctor Henry Davis was the 2nd and died in 1826; the 3rd was Martha Davis who married Col. John Ewing Calhoun, who was brother of the Vice President's wife. Marth Davis Calhoun had 4 children and the eldest was named Ransom Calhoun. Notify Administrator about this message?
