Searching for birth of Charles DAVIS, born abt 1777 England
I'm researching my DAVIS family tree but I have a mystery on my hands! I have an old family document which states that my gggg Grandfather Charles DAVIS was born 25 Dec 1777 on the Isle of Wight but there is no Christening record for him on the island. He ran away from home when young to London and started work for the Duke of Rutland, in whose service he remained for over 50 years. In 1841 he is living in Woolsthorpe by Belvoir, Lincolnshire, the village next to the Duke's country estate (Belvoir Castle) with Mary DAVIS (50 yrs) perhaps his wife, and children Harriet DAVIS (who later married William How MILLHOUSE), Charles DAVIS, Susan DAVIS. His elder children Ann DAVIS (who had already married William ROBERTS), and John DAVIS had presumably left home.
