I am one of 8 children of Leonard Joseph DeVaughn, Sr. born Baltimore, Md 1922. His father was John Earl DeVaughn who was the son of Alexander DeVaughn and Annie Burns. We have traced Annie back to London England but have been unable to trace Alexander.

Since I am of Irish and tracing farther Scottish decent on my paternal grandmothers side (Gilmore)I have been looking in Ireland and have found a Lucy DeVaughn there in the 1700's.

My father always said that the last name was originally Vaughn and was Irish and that my great grandfather had to flee Ireland where he was to be hung as a horse thief. He fled to France and the "De" was added. I have also heard that it is a Belgian name. I would love to find the source since it is still more unusual to see than not.

Interestingly I have also run across another Cynthia DeVaughn in VA. Isn't that odd since both names are not that common?

Also my 3 brothers were named for relatives on my fathers side: Leonard Jr, Robert Cameron and John Alexander. My father has a brother named John Alexander and my grandfather had several brothers one of whom was nicknamed "Duke" I believe there was a sister named Emma. They would all have been born somewhere around 1900 but I don't know where. My dad also had a cousin Robert who died in young probably in the 1950's in Baltimore (I think).

If you find more please let me know
