June 1901 was a tough month for the Doan families of Beaverton, MI. The Gladwin County Record dated June 21, 1901 reported the death of Daniel Doan (age 41) of Beaverton who had fallen from a lumber wagon at Butman a week earlier: "Dan Doan fell from a wagon at Butman last week and severely injured his back. His friends here were shocked Tuesday by receiving a report of his death from his injuries. Interment here Wednesday." The following article reported that the Jonathan Doan family of Beaverton suffered six cases of Smallpox: "Dr. Pierce reports six cases of smallpox in the family of Jonathan Doan as follows: John, Thomas, Al, Joe and Herman Doan and Willie Nichols. These are well-developed cases of smallpox, and likely resulted from accidental exposure of John, the first one to become ill with the disease, while returning from the upper peninsula." Another page in the same issue carried Dan Doan's obituary: "Daniel A. Doan died as at the home of Eugene DeBolt in Nester [Roscommon County] June 17, aged 41 years, 5 months, 12 days. Mr. Doan fell from a loaded wagon a few days since, the result of a sunstroke, and sustained injuries no doubt hastening his death. The remains were taken to Beaverton for burial Wednesday. He leaves two children, a son and a daughter. Mr. Doan had been a resident of Beaverton a number of years." I believe that Jonathan Doan was married to Esther, and that their children included the Joseph Doan who had 28 children. Jonathan Doan died 5/15/1906. His obituary was published in the Gladwin County Record on May 24, 1906: "Doan - Jonathan Doan of Beaverton died Tuesday, May 15, aged 61 years of heart disease, the reult of rheumatism, from which he had been suffering many years. He leaves a wife and seven children. Funeral was held Friday in the Presbyterian church at Beaverton. Interment in Beaverton cemetery. Mr. Doan carried insurance in the Gleaners." Esther was probably the Esther Elizabeth Doan who died 6/18/1914. She was last found in the 1910 census for Tobacco Twp., Gladwin Co, MI as head of the household that included sons John (27), Thomas (25) and Norman (17). I don't have her obituary available to me now, but I will post it when I find it. Notify Administrator about this message?
