Hi. My daughter, Elizabeth, was just looking up the Doane Family on the internet and we found your message. We also are descendents of Deacon John Doane. We come from the line of Elijah's brother Joseph.
This is what we have on record. Deacon John Doane had five children with his wife Abigal, one of them being Daniel. Daniel then had nine children with his first wife (we don't have her name). We continue as you do from his son Daniel, who had eight children with his first wife Mehitebal Twining. He also had five children with his second wife Mary Yates.
Elijah was one son, from whom it appears you are descended. We are descended from his brother Joseph. Joseph married Mary Carter and had seven children. His son Ebenezer married Anne Sloy and had nine children. Their son Joseph married Mary Cunnard and had seven children. William, their son, married Charity Hughes and had two children. The daughter Isabelle Jane Doane is my great grandmother. She and her husband, David Reid, had two sons; my grandfather Calvin Reid had a daughter, my mother Martha Doane Reid. Our family had three girls,one of which had Doane in her name. I had two daughters and passed the name onto the oldest, Elizabeth Doane.
We have a book called the Doane Family history that goes into great detail about Deacon John Doane and the family. I believe it's out of print. Also, we were contacted by Gilbert Doane many years ago. He was looking for information about the Doanes. I have his address somewhere.
Do you know about the Doane Gang? According to a book on gangs that we found, they are considered the first recognized outlaw gang in the country. They were composed of Moses and five brothers and were at their height in the late 1780s. They robbed the Penn. state treasurer, were later arrested, and four were hanged. The others, including our ancestor Joseph, fled to Canada, which is where our family comes from (Newmarket, Ontario). He and some others were supposedly vindicated.
I don't know if this helps. I have a list of all the children down to Joseph and Elijah and then it just goes down out lineage. If you are interested in any of this, please let us know.
