From "Gladwin History, Now & Then", page 63 - an article written about the lumbermen of Bomanville by La Vern Boman: "The first family to the north of Cherry Hill was Joseph Doan, who would be the father of 28 children, 12 by his first wife and 16 by the second . . ."
Now THAT is a fertility rate!
His neighbors were Bill Doan and John Doan - they may have been brothers of Joseph, since all had been workers at the Bomanville camp. Time period was between 1900 and 1920. I assume from the wording that he did not have all 28 there at Cherry Hill -- he could not have made enough money to feed them all working at the lumber camp. Cherry Hill was described as being 3 miles south of Bomanville. Bomanville now is still listed on maps, but has no buildings, except for a 1 room hunting cabin 1/4 mile west. The next nearest building now is a mile west on the corner of Wildwood and Bomanville roads. Bomanville has become well known because people who "off" someone in a fit of rage usually drive out there to dispose of the body, since it is about as remote a place as can be found in Michigan without walking for miles. Cherry Hill does not even appear on maps any more, but it at least has the broken down remains of one old house and an outbuilding.
Anyone with access to the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census of Gladwin County is asked to please respond to this posting with information from the census to help identify this prodigious progenitor. This was in Grim Township. The northern part of Grim Township where these places are located was once a seperate township which may have been called Sherwood Twp. - it was T19N R2E. The northern part of Bomanville would have been in Bourret Township - T20N R2E. The census for each of these townships would have been 2 pages or less -- unless Mr. Doan's family is all listed - that would take half a page.
