Well, You're writing a history of Gladwin County? I'd be happy to give you any other information that I have that you don't. Although it sounds like it won't be much...:-) Beaverton: Joe's mom, dad, and younger brother, Ai, are buried in the Beaverton Cemetary. The plot was listed under Dean until I found it two months ago. Jonathan bought land in Beaverton in 1905. 40 rods east of the S.W. corner of the S.W. 1/4 of the S.W. 1/4 of Section 6, Town 17. He was never able to develop it because he died in 1906. His wife held the property until 1916 when she passed away and all the brothers gave the rights to her son Herman Doan and her grandson, William Nicholls. Joseph: Joe's brother William bought the first land in Sheridan in May, 1914. Then Joe in July,1914. Then John Doan. It was considered Homestead Tax Land and sold for 10 cents an acre but the family called it the Swamp Tax Land. Joe was head of the Conservation Cilivian Corp (CCC) and he opened the Mosquito Alley trail and then just kind of "squatted" on it. He was head of the group that opened all the trails in GRIM township all the way up to the Molasses River camp. The old name for Cherry Hill was The Indian Jimmy Camp. There was one old indian woman that lived out there next to a well. I have relatives on the other side of the family, that lived off Three Rivers Road and the Doan family "legends" were quite wild. Joe's name is in the courthouse because he helped build it. Him and Myrtle were the township "recorders" until the house burnt down and many land records were lost. I can get you the date of the newspaper article if you want it. Also, another newspaper article from 1930, that tells the story: During the Roosevelt/Landon election, the Gladwin County Record paid Joe a case of beer to bring in the first results of the presidential election for that year. The seven members of the township gathered at midnight and the results: Roosevelt 5, Landon 2. The Detroit News published the results in their first edition and the Gladwin reporters got $50. I understand that you might want to "borrow" some of the old pictures. I have a picture of the original Boman's that settled Bomanville. Joe standing on the old railroad when it was being built. A picture of William and Martha Doan. Joseph, Myrtle, and family. Then Joseph and Myrtle with only the second set of kids. A picture of John alone and one with his wife and first three children. I have other's but I don't know which you're interested in. My Aunt Ester got a camera when she was 14 and went a little picture crazy. Other pictures have come from John's living son, Leonard Doan, who's 88. Stacee Notify Administrator about this message?
