The photos you have sound interesting. We have few photos from that area of the county since most of the families there did not stay in the county after about 1910 - and they took their pictures with them. Things were getting pretty tight, and farmland in Sheridan Township was not good to start with, so many of the families may not have been able to afford pictures anyway.

A fire destroyed the Bomanville area quite completely, and it was never resettled. I have found what I believe to be the location of the buildings depicted in the photo posted at www.gladwinhistory.org - but I am keeping that exact location under wraps until I can see if we can get a semi-pro archeology group to sponsor a dig there. Any photos you have that show the Bowmanville landscape and buildings would be very helpful in that endeavor.

My wife's g-g-uncle was postamaster at Bowmanville for a part of the town's brief existence, but he was seriously estranged from his only son, and died at the Gratiot County Poor Farm with almost no posessions. We have not been able to track down any photos he might have had - most family members assume that he did not keep any, or they were disposed of by the staff at the Poor Farm. His son did not want to even claim the body, but was forced to by the court. I am quite certain he did not want to keep any of his father's belongings.

Except for the David family and the Doans, I don't know of many families with progeny still in this area. Your pictures might be all that we can find to use in the Sesquicentennial books.

Note that I said "books" - there will be two: Biographies and Family histories in book 1, and general histories in book 2. I expect to have about 800 pages between the two, and I want lots of pictures like we have in the Beaverton Centennial book.

Beaverton has had several Doan and Doane families over the years - including Joseph's clan.

Please email me directly so we can make arrangements to meet (if possible) to do high-resolution archival scans of your photos.

Bob Frei
