Some Sussex UK Assize Court Records mentioning Downers From "Sussex Indictments from the Reign of Queen Elizabeth I" (she reigned from 1558 to 1603) Edward DOWNER. - served on an inquest jury at Bury (concerning a killing that happened at West Burton) 29 April 1579. William DOWNER. Edward WRAXALL, a labourer of Bury stole the horse of William DOWNER (value 20 shillings) at Newoods, Bury on 1 August 1582. Edward WRAXALL found guilty: sentenced to hang. John DOWNER of Houghton; husbandman. - had two sows (value 32 shillings) stolen on 3 November 1587 from Houghton Wood, Houghton. John DOWNER of Dallington. Robert STOCKTON, a labourer of Dallington, was indicted for murder by witchcraft, that on 28 May 1601 he bewitched William a JEAMES ... who died 17 April 1602. John DOWNER of Dallington, husbandman, was called to give evidence against STOCKTON... but STOCKTON was found not guilty.
