Hi Dick and Irene..........It's fantastic to hear from after all these years.
It sure was a bit of luck that Pat found my message in the geneaology site!
I can't beleive that you all ened up in Kent.
For years i visited Whitstable, as thats where my family all come from, and my Dad was running the Faversham Gun Club blackpowder range on the edge of town, and on top of that my Grandmother was living in Canterbury and my Aunt is still there (Durovernum Court) on the old Dover Rd!
I'm amazed and astounded and who would have thought i could have found you guys right on my doorstep every time i went home........I can't even tell you how many times i went through Herne Bay, and there you all were!!! After 25 years in the Army i retired as a Warrant Officer and my wife and 2 boys all came over to Canada, where i had met her when i was serving at a Brit unit in Suffield Alberta in the early 80's. We are a couple of hours from Calgary in a little village on the prairies called Cassils.
We own ten acres and a few cows and chickens, horses etc etc.
It's a lovely area, but flat as a pancake, and hotter than Hell in the summer (today it's 35 degrees Celsius) and in the winter it's colder than a freezer ( minus 40 is not uncommon!) However we love it and there is plenty of work here as we all float on Gas and oil, so there is a ton of oil patch work.
My boys by the way are now just coming up 16 and 13 they are allowed to drive, with an adult at 14, and get a full license at 16!
I had searched for you all many times when i had visited the UK as i had spent many years out of the UK. I had tried going through the South London phone book and sending E-Mails to anyone called Downer in the Web yellow pages after i blanked in the Epsom area, and i still cant believe you were all so close.
As i write this My Dad, Stepmum, Sisters and Brother in Law and all there kids will be in Whitstable for a bit of a gathering (my sis lives in the USA, and my dad only rarely goes back to his house in Whitstable as he now live s in Spain for most of the year) It's only me who cant be there cos i cant afford it or get the time off!
Well, Dick and Irene i guess thats enough from me for the moment. I hope this message finds you all fit and very well. I guess you guys are retired now........tell me is Herne Bay pier rebuilt, i thought i heard about it getting blown away years ago?
Oh, by the way, my Mother who lived in Albert Road died years ago at age 44 of cancer and my stepfather remarried and moved to Scotland where he promptly bought a pub in the middle of nowhere, got one of his sons to manage the place and last i heard he just golfs all day!!
