Downer Family Genealogy Forum

I am working with Pat Downer of San Angelo, Texas, who is a descendant of Francis Downer, son of John Downer of Anson County, North Carolina. We are endeavoring to trace the origins of the family prior to their arrival in North Carolina. Most of the information I have seen on Genforum relates to a history published many years ago called Downers of America, which is an account of the New England Downer family. An appendix relates to the Downer family of Anson Co., North Carolina. A suggestion is made in the account "that the first North Carolina [Downer] settler came from New England is possible..." This has become almost a fact in the minds of many of the Downer family researchers I have corresponded with, and there is no factual evidence the family came from there. John Downer was an adult in Anson County by 1763, and was referred to in deed records in 1774 as an heir of Thomas Downer. Thomas Downer settled in Anson County by 1757, and appears by his association, and by the chronology of records in NC to be the father of John. There does not appear to be a combination of father/son or brother/brother by these names in early New England records. Therefore we are pursuing the possibility these men may have immigrated directly to North Carolina from England. Does anyone have any research information relating to these men prior to 1757?
