I am not related to this Downer line. However, after reading this as I was getting it ready for you, I am amazed at the courage some of our ancestors. Most of their children died young and it looks like this line ends with the children of Marvin and Margaret L Downer.

According to the "Downers Of America" book by David R Downer, Published in 1900:

1229 MARVIN, of Newton Falls, O. (1216James C.), m about
1822, Margaret L., dau of Alexander Sutherland, of
Newton, O. Had, all at Newton Falls,

1237 JAMES, b 6 June, 1824; d 12 Dec 1853, at
Placerville, Cal; unm.
1238 MARVIN A., b 18 July, 1826; d 21 Dec,1834.
1239 HARRIET, b 2 June, 1828; d 4 June, 1841.
1240 SARAH AURELIA, b 24 Apl, 1830; d 2 Aug, 1836.
1241 MARY ANN; b 12 Apl, 1833; d 8 Aug, 1836.
1242 FRANK, b 13 May, 1837. He was a soldier in the
Civil War, having in Dec, 1861, enlisted in the
6th Ohio Vols. under General Fremont. On account
of being unable to sleep, caused by taking care of
his brother John, who had been wounded and placed
in a hospital, he was given an over dose of
laudanum by a nurse and d 25 Sept, 1863; unm.
1243 CALISTA, b 21 Dec, 1838. She m 24 Jan, 1881, Thos.
A. Black, of Newton Falls; rem to Cleveland; still
living there (1898); no children.
1244 JOHN, b 8 Jan, 1843. He joined the 7th Ohio Vol
Infantry in June, 1861; was wounded at Cedar
Mountain 9 Aug, 1862; the ball passed through his
left lung, lodged in his back, and is there still.
He was discharged, but after remaining home for
six months enlisted in the navy. and served until
the war closed. Soon after he became insane from
the effect of the ball, and was placed in the
asylum at Cleveland, where he still remains.
1245 CLARISSA, b 14 Oct, 1840; d 22 Sept, 1854.
