Julie, have you tried to link the Pownal Downers with the Shaftsbury Downers? It makes a lot of sense. The Shaftsbury Downers, Cyprian and bro. John, were sons of Stephen Downer (1717-1762) of Norwich CT. Our mutual ancestors Caleb Morgan and Lydia Rogers were married in Norwich CT in 1745, and removed to Pownal in the 1760s.

These people all migrated together, more or less, settling where they knew people. It wouldn't be too surprising if all these pieces fit together somehow.

My ancestor Mary Rockwood b Ashfield MA 1757 m1 Phillip Harvey, and lived in Bennington VT. (Their daughter lived in Pownal.) When her first husband died, Mary R Harvey remarried in 1802 a John DOWNER in Shaftsbury. They removed to Rupert VT where they are buried. I haven't checked the graves there yet, but I suspect this John is Cyprian's brother. I would be interested to know how those Downers are related to your Downers, and thought this might be a clue for you to explore.

Carolyn
