Hi Thomas I have been researching the Bathgate Eastons. My family seems to link distantly to your mysterious Henry Easton. There was a Henry Nisbet Easton, born 17/4/1794 in Bathgate and died there 5/2/1832. He married Mary Gillon, born in Bathgate 5/12/1793, died there 1871. Henry and Mary had children: Nisbet, William, Isabella, Henry and Mary. Mary Gillon remarried shortly before 1841 to an Irishman, PETER COURTNEY. He was thus stepfather of the Easton children & had also children with Mary Gillon. Your forefather Thomas Courtney appears in the 1851 Census as a son of Peter Courtney in West Calder. My guess is that Thomas was an illegitimate son of Peter's stepson Henry Easton. They probably attempted to hide the truth. Henry was born in 1832-1834. A very young father! Henry married Janet Sherriff in 1858, lived in Bathgate and had with her 9 children. We have started The Easton DNA Project at http://www.familytreedna.com/surname_join.aspx?code=M22367&special=true If you would like to prove Thomas really was Henry's son, you can join the project. In such case my Y-DNA should be rather similar to yours! I appear to share a common ancestor with Henry Easton in the early 1700s. Regards Rob Notify Administrator about this message?
