Dave, There are two unrelated Easton families in Chemung Co., NY and over the state line in Bradford Co., PA during the census years of 1850 and 1860. The William Easton (1794-1866) that is buried in Wellsburg Cemetery was born in NJ, according to the 1850 Ridgebury, PA census. Also in that same year, across the county in Wells, PA, was William S. Easton (b. c1813, also in NJ). I think he probably belongs to the family of the 1794 William. William c1813 had a different set of children than your ancestor, William H., the latter who was enumerated in 1860 in Southport, Chemung Co., NY. In 1870, this William S. Easton moved to the midwest. Your William H. Easton, b. c1819 in NY (according to the 1860 Southport census), cannot therefore be connected to this family. He may in actual fact belong to my Eastons of Oswego County, NY. John R. Easton (1828-1883), born in New Haven, NY, was the son of Nathaniel P. and Anna (Cross) Easton. He moved to Bleecker, Fulton Co., NY between 1840-1850, to be near to his siblings that had moved from Oswego County. In 1860, John is with his wife and family in Elmira, Chemung Co., NY, just a couple of miles from Southport. John's sister, Maria (Easton), wife of Asaph Smith, moved to Southport between 1856-1860. She is therefore living in the same town at the same time as your William Easton. A remarkable coincidence. Maria is my matrilineal ancestor. The probate of the estate of Nathaniel Easton (1884), father of John R. Easton of Elmira and Maria (Easton) Smith of Southport (residences in 1860), does not mention some of his children, a couple of whom I had to reconstruct from newspaper articles dating to the first decade of the 20th century (when your William H. Easton was perhaps already dead?). There is a 3 1/2 year gap between the births of Maria Easton and her next sibling, Amanda (June 1816-September 1819), so it is possible that your William might fit. Census enumerations are frequently inaccurate as to details of birth years and ages. Sometimes the surname is spelled without the "t." I could not seem to locate your William in 1850. Where was he in 1870 and later? Notify Administrator about this message?
