Do you know what town in England John George William Elsdon was born in? That would really help us to know. Personally I am searching in Toppesfield and the surrounding area for my Elsdon family.
I'd suggest if you know his birth date, writing to get a copy of his birth certificate from England. That would give you his parents names and where he was born. Then you could search parish records in the town where he was born and likely get further back that way.
If you are anywhere near a Mormon Church (Church of Jesus Christ of Later day Saints) contact them to use their family history centres. They can give you lots of help and other than a small charge to bring in materials for you the service is free. I'm in Canada and I access tons of information on various places in England that way.
