Dutch Relatives

Dear Name Barrers,

My name is Jeroen Eijer (or Eyer; this is a VERY big discussion how it should be written). I live in Rotterdam, the Netherland (Europe)

Okay....lets go on
I'm looking for information to understand my familyhistory. I retraced it untill the 1600 (Friesland). But at that moment the search stops...No record can be found to any older relatives.

In my search I discouvered my family were sailors. they were living, marring and di'ng on boots. From the record started from 1650 and later I learned the were travaling between Rotterdam, Amsterdam and Friesland. I that context I understand its very hard to retrace where al my grandparents are born.

Around that period (1600/1650, at the end of the war of 80 years), the so-called Oranje-family (the Royals) hired armies from Scotland and Switerland to defend the country against the Spanish and French arnmies.

I suspect that, with what I've learned, my family Eijer/Eyer could come from.....the Elzas. This is the-one-and-only place where I've found any other Eijer/Eyer oudside the Netherlands. The only other place where Eyer (only written in this way) live are the Northen-America's.

So I've a very simple and obvious question......
Can you, the Eyer, help me any futher on my quest of history of my family Eijer/Eyer.

I'm very curious in where the came from....If they were soldiers or sailors...or how the famaily got the N.America...Where they indeed from Switserland (maybe Ayer).
Does anyone know's whether my grandfather (recorded..) moved to the Netherlands around 1640?

Thanks in advence
Jeroen Eijer
