The derivation of Fe(a,i)rn(ey,i,y)ho(ugh) is from the English word for hill or copse - a hough. A ferney hough is one that has a lot of ferns growing on it. Many of the early ferneyhoughs came from north central England and were shepherds. I will have to look through my records to see what I have.
