Your darn right it's confusing. Your comments on William Flewelling are intriguing, and add material I did not have. I really don't know what to make of him. A son of Morris Flewelling, s/o John and Elizabeth ("Blue" Smith) Flewelling? Or, perhaps, as you suggest, a s/o Francis, s/o Robert. As for the others, this seems part and parcel of the problem with the Glens Falls, NY Flewellings. I am constantly waffling between their being descended from Francis, or from his brother, Ezekiel; or even, possibly, from their uncle, Abraham (the New Jersey one.) At the moment, I think Francis. It is a complex matter, but part of the theory is: 9K. FRANCIS FLEWELLING b. probably North Castle, Westchester Co., NY 18JUN1751, d. Fishkill, Dutchess Co, NY 17APR1806, bur. Presbyterian Churchyard, Brinkerhoff, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, m. JEMIMA TRENCHARD?, d/o John and Elizabeth (Ruland or Rolland) Trenchard (?) Long, long explanation here; but I know Francis had children, and I think some of those children were: 9K1. JOHN FLEWELLING b. ca. 1770, d. ca. 1815 9K2. ABRAHAM FLEWELLING b. ca. 1767, m. PHOEBE PURDY (b. ca. 1769) 9K3. JEMIMA (“MIMA”) FLEWELLING b. ca. 1773 or b. 1796, d. 1883, d/o Francis Flewelling, m. ca. 1817 in New York State JOHN RESIDE, lived in Delaware Co., NY 9K4. CHARITY FLEWELLING b. ca. 1796, d. MAY1850, bur. Presbyterian Churchyard, Brinkerhoff, Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY, m. 10DEC1829 FRANCIS GILES (b. Fishkill, Dutchess Co., NY 13JUN1763.) With Abraham, (whom I am assuming to be Francis son for two reasons: who else could be his father? and the use of the name Francis), there is more long, long explanations. Part of it is: 9K2. ABRAHAM FLEWELLING Abraham Flewelling b. ca. 1767, m. Phoebe Purdy (b. ca. 1769) is assumed here to be a son of Francis Flewelling. He was the subject of an insolvency procedure in 1829 (Insolvent Papers, 1814-1860: Warren County, New York.) In the 1830 census of Queensbury, Warren Co., NY was: Samuel Flewelling (age 20-30)with a wife (also 20-30), a son (5-10)and two daughters under 5. Isaac Flewelling (20-30) wife (15-20) two children (boy and girl, both under 5) Abraham Flewelling (60-70) wife (60-70 It would seem that Abraham Flewelling (b. ca. 1765 plus or minus 5 years) was the father of Isaac and Samuel. In 1840, there is only: Isaac Fluellen (30-40) wife (30-40) son (10-15), daughter (under 5) two daughters (5-10), daughter (10-15) Also in 1840 in Troy, Renssalaer Co., NY is: Samuel Fleuellen (40-50), wife (30-40), son (5-10), two sons (10-15) a male (son?) 15-20), two daughters (10-15) presumably Samuel above. In 1850 Abraham Flewelling age 73 (this probably should be 83 therefore b. ca. 1767, so probably the same above) had a wife, Phoebe (age 81), and with him were Timothy Flewelling (50) and Lucinda Flewelling (5). Separately was Lois Flewelling, age 40 who is believed to have been Timothy's wife. Also in 1850 in Caldwell, Warren Co., NY, in the house of Henry (31) and Susan (33) Ainsworth is their daughter, Mary Ainsworth (5) and Timothy Flewelling (15). This, and other fragments, seem to give some children of Abraham as: 9K21. SAMUEL FLEWELLING b. ca. 1799, d. 3APR1875, m. ELIZABETH _____ (b. Rensselaer Co., NY ca. 1804) 9K22. ISAAC FLEWELLING b. ca. 1800-1810, m. BETSEY (STROPE?), d/o? John Strope 9K23. TIMOTHY FLEWELLING b. Westchester Co., NY ca. 1802, d. Queensbury, Warren Co., NY 30MAR1888, bur. West Glens Falls Cem., m. LOIS C. BURNHAM (b. ca. 1810), d/o David and Margaret (Van Dusen) Burnham 9K24. FRANCIS FLEWELLING b. ca. 1803-1807, d. DeWitt, Clinton Co., MI 6DEC1879, m. JEDIDAH TYLER (b. 1791, d. 1888, bur. DeWitt Cem.) 9K25. JAMES FLEWELLING With Francis Flewelling [9K24] we begin to get on more certain grounds. 9K24. FRANCIS FLEWELLING Francis Flewelling b. (near New York City?) ca. 1807 (or ca. 1803), d. In the 1870 census of DeWitt, Clinton Co., MI he was living ‘next’ to his son, Abraham Purdy Flewelling, was aet. 63 years, and had been b. in NY State. With was his wife, Jedidah, age 79, b. Seneca, N. Y., 2JAN1812, d. 13DEC1867, m. 14OCT1839, Betsey E. Scotford (b. 14OOCT1809; d. 16JAN1880. He was a farmer and a resident of. Wheatland and DeWitt, MI. Their daughter was: MARY C. On 19MAR1896, Albert Laurence Flewelling, a lawyer, possibly the probate judge for Iron Co., in Crystal Falls, Michigan; wrote to Mrs. William (Maria Dunlop) Philip. In it, he says his grandfather, Francis Flewelling, came to Michigan from New York State, that Francis' father was Abram Purdy Flewelling, that Francis' brothers were James, Timothy and Isaac, that Timothy settled at "Flenns" Falls and was at the time of his death the richest man in Glenn Falls. (If the last is true, it is welcome news as Abraham Flewelling was the subject of insolvency proceedings about 1822?) Albert goes on to write that Francis had two children, Albert's father and the Rev. F. T. Flewelling, a Methodist minister. Albert describes himself as 34 years old, blue eyes, black hair, 6 ft. tall, 215 lbs. F. T. Flewelling appears in the 1870 census of Olive, Clinton, Co., MI (roll 669, p. 560), but the version available to me is eligible. Francis Tyler|1831-1911| C100C101|FLEWELLING|Mary WHITNEY|1841-1889|"His Wife" This brings up an unclear issue. Albert Laurence Flewelling stated that the father of Francis Tyler Flewelling was Francis Flewelling, and that Francis, Sr.’s father was Abraham Purdy Flewelling. Obviously, the Abraham P. Flewelling buried in the De Witt Cemetery is not Francis Flewelling’s father, and I assume that it is his son, the father Albert fails to name. Abraham P. Flewelling’s middle name may well have been ‘Purdy’, but it seems unlikely that Abraham Flewelling, the father of Francis, Sr., would have that middle name. I suspect that Albert confused his father’s name with that of his great grandfather, Abraham Flewelling who married Phoebe Purdy. Francis T. Flewelling, minister and farmer, resident on section 31, Bethany Township was born July 26, 1831, in Warren Co., N. Y., and is the son of Francis and Jedidah (Tyler) Flewelling. The family patronymic is a corruption of the Welsh name Llewellyn one of the titles of a former Prince of Wales to whom the family trace remote kinship. Francis Flewelling, Sr., was born in the vicinity of the city of New York in 1807. He was a wagon-maker by trade, and in the year 1829 he was married to Mrs. Jedidah (Tyler) Fletcher. The mother was born in 1790 in Crittenden Co., Vt., and belonged to the same family from which President Tyler descended. The father pursued his vocation at different points in the State of New York some years. In the fall of 1844, he came to Michigan and settled at Hanover, Jackson County, where he purchased a farm and engaged in agriculture. He sold the place in 1864, and removed to De Witt, Clinton County, where he purchased another farm. He continued its management about 12 years, when, his health becoming impaired, he again sold his estate and bought property in the village of De Witt, to which he retired. His death occurred Dec. 6, 1879. The mother survives, and is residing with her son in Bethany Township. She is 94 years old. The Flewelling family are among the heirs of Anneka Jans, and claimants to the Trinity Church property in the City of New York. The Rev. Mr. Flewelling obtained his early education in the common schools. He received his discharge from his obligation as a minor at the age of 18, when he began his contest with the world. The year following he bought 40 acres of land in Jackson County, paid sufficient to secure his title and possession, and ran in debt for the remainder. He taught school the following winter in Polaski, receiving $12 a month and “boarding round.” The board was assessed according to the “scholars,” and sometimes the school money was six months in being collected, the method being pro rata. He continued teaching winters and working on his land summers until it was wholly improved and paid for. In the fall of 1857, Mr. Flewelling applied for and obtained a position as an officer of the State Prison located at Jackson. He became a “guard,” and was assigned to a place on the wall, armed and under orders to shoot convicts who attempted to escape. On the third day, about 40 prisoners tried to escape by scaling the walls, and two succeeded, The bullets flew but no one was injured, and the rebellious convicts were secured. The marriage of Mr. Flewelling to Mary C. Whitney, of Jackson, occurred in December, 1858. Her parents, Nathan and Elizabeth Whiney, were pioneer settlers of Wheatland, Hillsdale County. They came from the State of New York in 1837, and located 160 acres of land in the (then) wilderness. They encountered all the varieties of pioneer experience, among which were frequent nightly visitations by wolves, and at one time a harvest of 50 heads was piled in the cellar awaiting the payment of the bounty. Mrs. Flewelling was born on the homestead June 24, 1841. In 1855, her father became an employee at the prison in Jackson, where he officiated in various positions until 1862. The daughter is the only survivor of a family of four. After his marriage, Mr. Flewelling assumed charge of the paint shop attached to the wagon works of the prison contractors. Three years later, he engaged in farming on a place he had purchased near De Witt, Clinton County. He sold the place in the winter of 1882, and bought the farm where he now resides, including a quarter of section 31. It is in fine agricultural condition, and fitted with a nice residence and highly creditable farm buildings. His family includes two children: Frank L. born April 14, 1860, in Jackson, and Ralph Tyler, born Nov. 23, 1871, in De Witt. Mr. Flewelling was ordained a minister of the Free Methodist Church in the fall of 1880 at Gaines, Shiawassee Co., Mich. He was in the traveling connection two years while a resident of De Witt, since when he has been in the local ranks. 9K2411. FRANK LUTHER FLEWELLING b. Jackson, MI 14APR1860, m. 11NOV1880 9K2412. Throughout life the father has followed the occupation of farming and is still living on the old homestead in Michigan, but the mother passed away several years ago. In their family were four children, three sons and one daughter. Mr. Flewelling of this review is the youngest son. He obtained a good practical education in the public schools of Michigan and for a time was engaged in the newspaper business in Elgin, Illinois. He also owned and edited a paper at Batavia, that state, but in 1894 returned to Michigan and was engaged in mining at Crystal Falls until 1906. The latter year witnessed his arrival in Washington and he has since been in charge of the office of the Milwaukee Land Company at Centralia. In the interest of the company he has purchased timber land in Lewis and adjoining counties, which he has subsequently sold to various mills. At present his principal business is looking after the land of the company in Chehalis, Lewis Cowlitz, Pacific and Thurston counties and in his hands their affairs have always been most capably managed. At Crystal Falls, Michigan, Mr. Flewelling was married in 1900 to Miss Agnes McCourt, a daughter of James McCourt, who at one time was a photographer at that place but is now living retired with our subject and his wife in Centralia, the family residence being at 314 Iron street. Mr. and Mrs. Flewelling are earnest and consistent members of the Presbyterian church, of which he is one of the directors, and he also holds membership in the Commercial Club of Centralia. Fraternally he is connected with the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He is a man whom his fellow citizens have the utmost confidence and wherever known he is held in high regard. 9K2424. daughter I believe I have posted much of what I have on the Glens Falls family elswhere here, but perhaps the above may be of use.
