They had Willard Hinton 1845 3 marriages kids by each

David was the son of Gabriel who produced most of those in Baker- born 23 Jan 1782 died after Aug 1931 Sampson Co NC and Sarah

All of these are shown by the Baker Co Census Taker as being born Sampson Co NC

Wright Merritt son of Gabriel married Mary Vickers 15 Jan 1843 Randolph Co Ga. She was born 1 Jul 1814 Twiggs Co Ga died 27 Feb 1884.

Temperance Jane married Thomas Tipton and had at least 3 children Her whole name was used in will of Aunt Unity Merritt Dec 1 1873. (You will note the Tipton family intermingled with the Merritt-several in Baker)

Jacob Henry Merritt born 22 Jun 1830 Sampson was in Baker 1850. son of Gabriel- married Angeline Cox Woodcock- born 28 Jul 1835 Bulloch Co Ga-22 Dec 1893 Geneva Al 4 known children

Richard Garrison CSA 9 Mar 1833 Sampson NC d a 1965 married 1853 Early Co Ga Rebecca Collins b a 1830 Early, 13 Mar 1895 Randolph 5 known children-more. I have worked on this family for my Friend Rubye Lewis--more later)
Richard is said by many to have been born after Gabriel's death-
He is recorded, however, still alive-
and there is this:
1828-1831-From The Merritt Families of NC by Lynn Turner...August Term 1828 Gabriel gave bond for
support of a basterd child of Amelia Money which he was charged of being the reputed Father...Aug
Term 1830 Amelia allowed $12 for maintenance of bastard child begotten on her body by Gabriel
Merret. Aug 1831 Amelia got $8 for one year Feb 1 1830 to Feb 1
Also there Absolom, Levy, Sam, Burrwell,Frederick,Jacob,Michael,David,Wm.
Census says Rutehrford, but is noted with Sampson...1831
Several of Sara's children were born after his death. (Supposidly)
That might make some folks leave NC for parts unknown!

1820-Gabriel wrote his will-Sampson Co NC- a copy was in Morgan, Calhoun, Ga. (There is evidence that he did not die then-see below-and probably produced other children after this date)
Note there is no PROBATE date here-just making a will.
When a lot of these pioneers decided to move-they made wills before they left. It was a rough road,and many died.
You will find many instances of a will where they came from-and probation-where they or the family-ended up, or in both areas.

State of North Carolina- I, I.R. Beaman clerk of the court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions in & for the County of Sampson do hereby certify the forgoing to be a true copy of Gabriel Merritts will as now apart of the record of my office.
Witness whereof I have hereto set my hand & seal of my office the 17th day of October 1856 & 81st year of American Independence."

After his will-he was definately alive-as proved by these two things:
1821-May Term Deed from Gabriel Merrit to Saul Smith Oath of J Corbitt..
1823-Aug Term 1823 Frederick Sasser Appt overseer of road in room of Gabriel Merritt. (Probably selling out-and moving here but not called dec'd)
