ROCK AUSTIN would come to ALABAMA to visit his relatives in Talladega Co.-the city of SYLACAUGA. John William or William Ralph Austin may have been Rock's brother. John William Austin bn. 1839 in Ga. had married Mary Elizabeth Sutherland bn. 1849. Mary Elizabeth Sutherland looks very Native Amer. in her pictures. Rumors are that John William was her uncle or cousin, and her parents didn't approve of him. When they ran away together, the Sutherland's hunted Austin to kill him. The couple settled in mid-Alabama and raised a family of 7 children. The 1880 census finds them in Shelby Co. Al. with 4 children. They later move to Talladega Co. and are buried in Coosa Co. Al. I am desperate for answers. We have looked for information on them 11 years, and found only this census and one more sorce. Please let us know, Linda and William Austin
