I found this in the 1930 Federal census for Cook county:
Opheila Shepherd Head 69 Negro
Dora Shepherd Daughter 37
LH Mayer Son 11 Negro
Danie Mayer Son 10
Lula M Mayer 9 Negro
Willie L Mayer Son 6 (There is a Willie L Mayer, age 82, living in valdosta)
Census Place: Militia District 1157, Berrien

Is this your Dora Shepherd?

If you're a descendant of Henry August Mayer, perhaps you can tell me why the race for some of the above family is given as Negro.

I believe my niece is a descendant of Lula M Mayer. I also believe Lula M Mayer formal name was Louise Marie Mayer. Perhaps you can help me with that as well.
