My Bruton/Brewton ancestors ended up in Bulloch and Tattnall Counties. They originally lived in old Dobbs (now Lenoir) County, NC, then some went to Orangeburgh/Barnwell District, SC, before going to Georgia. There were other families living near them in the Carolinas who also moved to the same area of Georgia. There was a Cannon family near them in Barnwell District, it was on the south side of the Edisto River. George Bruton (b. between 1755 and 1760) was married to Elizabeth Cannon, daughter of Daniel Cannon.

I don't know if any of this is of help, only to suggest that you might want to look at the Cannons in Barnwell District SC, as there might be some connection.
