Ms. Nevels,

My wife provides the following information. According to the dates given it seems there were three Nutt children living with Harold Byars in 1870: William Prentice Nutt, John George Nutt, and Martha Emma Nutt (my wife's grandmother). The father of the three children was James B. Nutt, killed in the Battle of Richmond in 1862. He was the brother of Eliza Anne Nutt, who was Harold Byars' first wife. At the death of this first wife, Harold Byars married the widow of James B. Nutt, Mary Isabella Moore Nutt, who died in 1868. "Harrie" was evidently the same as Harold N. Byars, the step-father of the children. The children were also the nephews and niece of Harold's first wife. This information is also found in print in The History of Butts County Georgia 1825-1976, published in Atlanta, GA by Cherokee Publishing Company, 1978.

If you want to discuss this complicated arrangement more, contact Mrs. Jane Anne Settle at Email jsett@charter.net, telephone (770) 775 5324, or 763 West Third Street, Jackson, Georgia 30233.

Hope this helps.

John Settle
