Some Notes on the Endsley Family
Leander Endsley of old Campbell County, Ga. (now divided into Douglas and south Fulton counties), who moved to Cass County, Texas, is said by several Internet sources to have died in 1877. Leander is also said to have had a daughter born in Cass County in 1884 (!). There is an L. Endsley, aged 32, on the 1880 census of Cass County (shown below) who seems to be Leander, so his death would have occurred after June 1880, not in 1877.

On the 21st day of December, 1882 after a few days illness JOSEPH ENDSLEY.
The deceased was born in Laurens District, South Carolina, December 22nd 1799. Had he lived one day longer he would have celebrated his eighty-third birthday.
He was married to Ellen C. Neill in 1824. In 1835 he and his wife joined the Baptist Church in which he ever remained an exemplary member. In the year 1859 he moved with his family to Cass Co., Texas, where he remained until the day of his death.
It would be impossible in a notice like this to give a correct portrayal of the rare virtues that were so happily blended in the character of the deceased friend of whom I write. Though his were lengthened beyond the years usually alloted to man. Yet his neighbors and friends were both part from one who had been such a safe councillor, as sincere a Christian and one who was always in full sympathy with his fellow men in their effort do do right.
The deceased leaves a wife – his faithful and trusted companion for next sixty years – and seven children, all of whom gladdened the father’s heart by openly espousing the cause of Christ – to mourn his loss. The reflection should be to them a happy one that, the father for whom they mourn had the full confidence and respect of all who knew him, it being a common remark that he did not have an enemy. Great as was the life, in Christian virtues of our departed friend, yet it was reserved until his last days for him to exemplify a perfect trust in that God whom he served. May his mantle fall to some of the young.
An aged and only surviving brother of the deceased that was present at his death said that mournful as was death, yet he found comfort in the thought that precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

“History of Coweta County, Georgia,” Coweta County Genealogical Society, 1988, page 250:
“The Endsley family lived in Coweta County around Haralson in the early 1800s. Records show that Joseph, John, James and Andrew G. Andsley were taxpayers in Coweta between 1837 and 1851. Two of the Endsley men were said to be doctors. Some Endsleys are buried on the Riley Couch farm, and others at Bethel Methodist Church.”
James Endsley, Jr., born about 1766 in Guilford County, NC, died 4 August 1852. His wife, Elizabeth Miller, born about 1774 in Maryland, died 29 dec. 1845 in Coweta County. Known and probbly children:”
1. John Bluford Endsley, born 1790, died 12 Oct. 1873 Cass Co., Texas, married 10 June 1815 Laurens District, SC, first to Ellender Miller, d. 1856; married 2nd 1857 to Mary Wheat (23 Oct. 1826-23 Sept. 1918, buried with husband John Bluford Endsley in Macedonia Cemetery, Miller County, Arkansas).
2. Elener Endsley, b. 29 Aug. 1797, d. 22 July 1881 Coweta Co., married 4 Dec. 1821, Laurens District, SC, to William Neill.
3. Joseph Endsley, b. 22 Dec. 1799, d. 21 Dec. 1882 Cass County, Texas, m. Ellen Cannon Neill.
4. James P. Endsley, b. 22 Nov. 1804 (note: other sources give the year as 1802), d. 13 March 1899 Cass County, Texas, m. Mary Ann Couch.
5. Jane Endsley married Matthew Couch. (The article does not give Jane or Matthew’s dates. “Coweta County Cemeteries” published by the Coweta County Genealogical Society, 1986, shows these dates on their markers in the Senoia City Cemetery: Matthew Couch, died 17 Dec. 1881 in the 90th year of his age, wife Jane, 22 March 1805-16 June 1884. New markers were installed in 1984 on the 100th anniversary of Jane Endsley Couch’s death.)
6. Essena Endsley born 12 Dec. 1812, d. 1879 Columbia County, Arkansas, m. Samuel Neill.
7. Sarah Endsley born c. 1816 m. 14 Nov. 1833, Coweta County, Needham Cockrell, moved to Texas.
8. Elizabeth Endsley married Enoch Couch.”
The Endsleys left Coweta County and moved into Douglas County and old Campbell County, and then later many of them moved to Texas.”

Pages 319-20 of “History of Coweta County, Georgia” lists the eight children of William Neill, 22 March 1795-17 Dec. 1874, and wife Elener Endsley. The eldest was James Garrison Neill, 3 Oct. 1822-9 April 1864, who was scalded to death by molten iron while making cannon balls and said to have been buried on the spot in Rome, Ga. Married Martha Stewart 21 Jan. 1844.

A son of James P. Endsley, 1802-89, was Matthew Endsley, 1829-62, who m. 27 Nov. 1853, Campbell County, Ga., Mary Ann Miller, 1832-1908. Mary Ann Miller Endsley is buried at Pray's Mill Baptist Church, Douglas (formerly Campbell) County, Georgia. Matthew died of measles at Lookout Mountain, Ga., according to his widow's pension papers filed in Douglas County. Mary A. Miller Endsley was a daughter of Robert and Nancy Buchanan Miller of old Campbell County.
Matthew's children included Henry H. Endsley, born Oct. 1854, who was a painter and farmer at Bright Star, Douglas County. The 1900 Douglas County census shows his wife Mary and daughter Tallie O., born March 1879, daughter Cora E., born Jan. 1882, Henry A., born Jan. 1888, daughter Zadie I., born June 1890, and Bertha L., born April 1893. Henry H. Endsley married 1878, Douglas County, Ga., Mary A. Taylor.
Other children of Matthew Endsley included Ellen E., 1857-1903, and Nancy, 1859-1927, both buried at Pray's Mill Church, Douglas County, and Mary E. Endsley, born Nov. 1861, who married 1880 Mose Thomas, born Feb. 1855, living in Douglas County, Ga., 1900, with children Mary O. b. Dec. 1880, Fannie L. b. Feb. 1883, William R. b. Aug. 1888, Matthew I. b. Aug. 1893.
