Can't tell you where to find a map of 1840, but there is a map of the present Carroll County Georgia Militia Districts at http://www.thegagenweb.com/gacarro2/maps.htm and viewing this map I can give you a fair description of what GMD 689 and GMD 729 looked like at the time.

Starting at the southern boundary of GMD 1297 extend a straight line westward from the Chattahoochee, through the southern portion of GMD 1541 into GMD 1483 to a point aligned with the western line of GMD 729. Extend this line northward to the existing western boundry of GMD 729. At the intersection with the southwestern boundary of GMD 1122, extend the line eastward through GMD 1542 to the Douglas County line. The results will be an "L" shape shoe-like appearance. This would be a close representation of the original GMD 729. County Line would be about a mile west of the river and a about one and a half miles south of the Douglas County church line (in 1840 it would have been Campbell County).

GMD 682 would share it's northern line with GMD 729 and bounded on the east and south by the river with the western boundry as shown but extending northward through GMD 1483 to the boundary of GMD 714. GMD 1297, 1483, 1541, and 1542 did not exist at the time.
