Can anyone tell me if there are any online obituaries available for Chatham County that would include the year 1954? I am trying to locate information from an obituary that probably appeared in a local newspaper, or even an article in the news section itself, considering the circumstances of the death. If no online source available, possible a number or other contact info for somewhere that might have what I'm looking for?
The person who died there was my aunt, Juanita Maxine Phillips Johnson, who was killed near Savannah in a fiery auto crash on November 20, 1954. An excerpt from her obituary published in the newspaper of her home town in Arkansas reads:
"Juanita Maxine Phillips Johnson, 24 years old, was killed in an automobile accident near Savannah, Ga., at 6:15 o`clock Saturday night, according to information received here by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Phillips.
She was a member of the women`s marine corps and was a passenger in a car with other military personnel. According to information received here, the driver of the car lost control on a curve and the car struck a tree, overturned twice, caught fire and demolished. One other person was injured in the mishap."
If anyone could tell me if any obituaries might be available, and where, I would appreciate it.
Also, another quick question... I've been trying to access the Georgia official website to order a death certificate, but haven't been able to load it for the 5 months of consistent attemps. I'm trying to load health.state.ga.us, and just always get a timeout on it. Is that a bad site to try to load? Very frustrating
