Hi Barbara, Well, maybe not most were German / Swiss, but certainly a whole lot of them were. And phonetic pronunciations for some of those surnames such as Young (Younge, or perhaps Jung) may point to either British or German origins for some of the individuals included on the document. That's part of the reason I emphasized the German / Swiss component of those who signed the document. There may more of them on the list than is obviously apparent. The credit for this material appearing here goes to my cousin Dr. Ed Mulligan. We had read a transcription of the material from the Declaration / Oath. But, we wanted to know whether the Jacob Readick of that document was the same man who took out a loan in 1806 and signed his signature to that loan document. For that we needed access to the original. Well, the two signatures do match. We now have mention of Jacob Readick as early as 1778 (in his father's will and and as late as 1818 (in deeds to his wife and daughter). He was dead by the time of the 1820 census. Anyhow, back to the Declaration / Oath. Ed is an Emeritus Professor at UGA and the document is stored in the UGA Libraries Manuscript Collections. But, it was misplaced or temporarily 'lost' and so had to be found. So, he got research staff to overturning the contents of several piles of documents and they finally found those four folded panels of silk and also the associated typewritten transcription of the original. They then took digital imagery and created a 5.0 megabyte PDF file of the original and transcription. Ed was provided that file and forwarded it on to me and our fellow researcher Dr. Niles Reddick [a regular denizen of the Georgia Archives ;-)]. I then took the scalable / zoomable PDF viewer and sampled two screen grabs of the original so that I could create JPEG image files from that PDF. That made them uploadable through RootsWeb (which doesn't allow PDF files). Yes, it was my goal to aid others in viewing this material and perhaps finding more information of value to them. I just hope that such turns out to be the case for someone. Dale Notify Administrator about this message?
