Dear Helen:

I do not have a direct answer for you; but maybe I could give you some suggestions as to where to look. I am researching a Cooper Family out of Savannah, GA around the 1800's. Do you know where in Florida she may have been buried? Have you tried to locate a death certificate from the Florida Department of Vital Statistics or which agency handles the death certificates for Florida? So much informtion can be gained from the burial records and from death certificates surrounding the person for whom you are searching. Do you know if your ancestor married before she moved to Florida? Was Cooper her maiden name or married name? I have looked through two books on Chatham County Marriages; but I could not locate an Elizabeth Jane Cooper.
Do you know of any family relatives who would have been living in Savannah, GA? Many times while tracing another family connected to your family you can gain valuable information about your own family. There is an orgainization in Savannah that has valuable genealogy history. It is called the Georgia Historical Society and it is located on Whitaker Street in Savannah. They have a website. You may wish to look at the Chatham County Federal Census data perhaps for 1830, 1840 and 1850. Do you know if she belonged to a church while she lived in Savannah? Someone once gave me some good sound advice about conducting genealogy research: Start with the latest information that you have and work backward. I would suggest that you try to locate as much information as you can starting with where she lived in Florida, where she may have belonged to a church, obtain copies of her death certificate and perhaps a copy of her obituary notice in the local town/city newspaper and get as much information as you can. A valuable document would be a copy of her will if she had one. Contact the courthouse in the county in which she lived and see if she had a recorded will. Then, work backward to 1823. Savannah has a cemetery in downtown by the name of Colonial Cemetery. You may wish to look at a book about this cemetery. Do you know if her parents were buried in Florida or Savannah? After you locate where she is buried you could speak with someone who handles the paperwork for the cemetery and see who bought the cemetery plot, when it was purchased and obtain a printout of who is buried in the lot. I hope that some of my suggestions will help you in your search. If I run into any information that may help you, I will send it on to you. Good luck.
Sincerely,
Carole Melson.
