Dear Eva:
Thank you for responding to my inquiry about the possible whereabouts of the Barnard Family Crypt on Wilmington Island, GA. I have been on Wilmington Island for the past 4 days visiting family. I have driven around the Island many times; but have found only one church cemetery which is relatively recent. I have written to Laurel Grove Cemetery and gotten some information regarding the Barnard Remains which were transferred to Laurel Grove Cemetery many, many years ago. Also, some of the people are mentioned in the WPA Writers' Guild documents at Savannah's libraries. However, I have not been able to locate any of the colonial burials of the Barnard Family, such as: Capt. John Barnard. He died in a duel. He married Miss Jane Bradley. I cannot locate the burial site for William Barnard and his wife, Sarah, John Barnard Cooper, grandson of Capt. John Barnard and son of Frances Barnard Cooper, daughter of William Barnard nor for John Cooper who died at the home of William Barnard on Wilmington Island. A couple of William's sons who died around 1808 are not listed in the Family Remains at Laurel Grove Cemetery. I cannot locate any burials for the above people in Savannah, and they are not listed in Colonial Cemetery. So, I have just about come to the conclusion that they had to have been buried on Wilmington Island. My son agrees with you that real estate development on Wilmington Island over the past century has destroyed any crypt that may have still been on the Island. From my study of the Barnard records, land grants, etc. I believe that they lived on land around the Oglethorpe Hotel going south down the Wilmington River/Wassaw River. This land has become especially valuable during the past century. I hope to write to the City of Savannah/Chatham County Department of Cemeteries and see if they can shed any information regarding the Barnard Crypt and/or cemetery. Thanks for your assistance. If you ever see any cemetery on the Island that may shed some light on my search, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Carole Melson.
