Carole,
After replying to your post, my curiosity started me asking around about sources for more information, since I've always known there were many small family cemeteries on the islands and know of the locations of a few, but not that of the Barnards. I was told about a book by a local author, Elizabeth Carpenter Piechocinski, titled Once Upon An Island; The Barrier and Marsh Islands of Chatham County, Georgia. Ms. Piechocinski has evidently done extensive research into not only the cemetery locations, but life on the islands as a whole from the time they were settled. The Barnards figure prominently in the book, along with many of the other old families who settled here. There are photographs of some of the cemeteries. It can be purchased from E. Shaver Book Sellers at 326 Bull Steet here in Savannah. According to this book, although the Barnard's original grant and the plantation was on Wilmington Island, all of what is now called Talahi Island was then considered part of Wilmington, and much of their land was located on what is now Talahi Island. The name of the property where the Barnard vault is still located later became known as "Nonchalance", and it appears from Ms.Piechocinski's writing that the vault and some other stones located beside it are still there. I highly recommend the book. Even for somebody like me who has been here for so long, there were many things I learned that filled in gaps and added to the things I had always known a little about, but not in detail. Between this book and possibly a visit to the Georgia Historical Society here in Savannah you may be able to get a better idea of where all these burial sites are located, and possibly locate any old maps of the islands that show the plantations and the cemeteries. If I can be of any help, please don't hesitate to contact me.
