The Rev. Wiley S. Leggett was my gr grandfather. He was born approx. 1818. I need info on where and his parents, siblings names. I believe there is a connection to the Wiley family and have posted to that board in hopes of getting some information. There are many, many Leggetts (spelled various ways) with the middle name Wylie (and a few with the first name Wiley). I imagine they are all connected but haven't been able to put it together yet. I also need information on Wiley's education, where he was ordained, etc. My first location for Wylie is in GA in August 1848 when he was a member of the Salem United Baptist Assn. During that year he and his first wife Susan (who may have been Nancy Susan or Susan Nancy Smith (Smith unconfirmed - approx. bd 1818).. I need information on her and date of marriage) were received by the First Baptist Church of Blakely, Early County, GA. They were dismissed in November of 1848 and Wylie became the pastor at Bainbridge, Ga. I believe he was there about 6 years. He became a charter member of the Magnolia Lodge in Early County in 1849 and was their first Chaplain. From 1849-1860 he was a member of the Bethel Baptist Assn. He was called back to Blakely Baptist in 1851 but his wife; Susan, passed away in October and he didn't begin service until later. Their children were Amanda (may be Marinda), Elizabeth, James, Amathea (may be Marinda), Rachel, Mary and Sarah. Her obit in the Christian Index states that she had a 3 week old son at time of death; but no name given. Late in 1851 he married Lyddora (Liddora, Lida, various spellings) Sheffield. I need specific information on her but she was born about 1825. Her father's name was John. I believe they had two children that I can confirm; Jane and Martha. Other children may have been Silas, G.S., Lulia or Julia, L.E. and W.S. or W.D. that were supposedly all born in Georgia. The W.S. may be the next Wiley S. in the line but all I have are initials. Does anyone have access to the 1860 census so we could possibly get full names and dates of birth? In 1859 Wiley and family are dismissed from service in GA to move to Louisiana. In 1860 he is given leave as Pastor of Bethel & Salem Churches to join the Confederacy as a Chaplain. In 1864 Wiley is a moderator for the Baptist Conference at No. Bethel Bapt. Church, Rocky Mtn. LA. In 1865 he requested a letter of dismissal from service (unconf. as to whether he was still with Bethel/Salem) for himself, Lydia (another spelling ?) , Martha and Rachel. All of the previous information is confirmed. The following is information that I have recently gathered but not yet confirmed. Wiley is found on the 1860 Bossier Parish, LA census along with wife Lida (another spelling), Marinda, Martha, Rushie, Mary, Sarah. I don't know if Rushie was a male/female but may have been the unnamed infant child with Susan. I have no confirmed death information for Wylie or Lydorra. Via this and other boards and contacts I do have some leads to follow up on but if anyone actually has this information it would surely help. I cannot confirm that Wiley ever had a son named Wylie; but if he didn't apparently there were a number of Leggett's in LA/TX who DID! I'm wondering if perhaps Lyddora passed away and he married again and had more children ... and probably some of his children named their children Wylie as well. The info re: his children that I have is listed above. There is a message re: Wylie in the 1870 census in Winn Parish (spelled Ligett) that I would like to know if it lists his wife and children. There is a reference to another Rev. Wiley Leggett in the 1950's in Rapides Parish and orig. from Grant Parish .. can't be my Wiley but could surely be a namesake. I know that Wylie's daughter Elizabeth married Algerine McCann. I have a marriage for a Marinda (not confirmed that it's this Marinda) in Bossier Parish in 1860 to a J.P. Logan and that is all I have on Wylie's children's marriages. I believe that all or most of the TX / LA Leggetts are related if we can just get all the info out there. You help me and I'll help you.
