Frank, Evidently the 1850 census records available at the GA Archives in Morrow Ga are the original records. At some point a handwrittten copy of these records was made and that copy was freely distributed. The original contains complete spellings of all the given names, while the copy often has only the first letter of the given name. This is true most of the Sloan's we've been working on in Crawford Co. I visited my local library (Canton Ga) last night which has a microfilm copy of the 1840 Crawford Co census.....it was actually a microfilm image of the copy....no given names for our Sloans. I assume that the images of that census available on the internet are also copies w/o full given names. I spent almost 6 months trying to discover who J.A. Sloan was.....had I gone to the original documents, the full name was available: Joseph A. Sloan. I'm beginning to understand the frustration with census records.
