"Blast for the Past
Folks in Crawford County are undertaking a very ambitious project. The Crawford County Historical Society plans to renovate and restore the Old Crawford County Courthouse. Plans call for turning the historic building into a museum. Built in 1851, it's one of the oldest courthouses in the state.
Located in Knoxville, the county seat, it will serve as a museum that highlights the county's history. That includes people such as John Pemberton, the inventor of Coca-Cola who was born in the county; Jefferson Franklin Long, the first African American elected to the U.S. congress, who lived in Crawford County; Joanna Troutman, who designed a forerunner of today's Texas state flag; and Benjamin Hawkins, who established Fort Hawkins in what is now Macon and who is buried in Crawford County. It will also highlight the county's pottery.
The historical society is planning a May capital funds campaign with a weeklong slate of activities, from May 16-23, which has been dubbed Blast for the Past. It will include an exhibit of Crawford County pottery, a preview party at the old courthouse, a parade and the Brown Jug Festival.
