I know for a fact that my g-grandfather John Marshall Ross planted a large hardwood tree in Payne Cemetery about 1862 and he was buried under it in 1927, but no stone was erected. I also know that many of his family (Ross, Amos, and Buchanan) were buried there, but how can I investigate?
Are there any records? Were there public notices of funerals? Church records? Anything?
