I have a booklet, The Civil War on the Lower Sweetwater Creek Basin, written by Ray Henderson and published by The Friends of Sweetwater Creek State Park and The Douglas Co. Archeology Assn. in 1995. I am not absolutely certain, but I believe I got it in the Park Headquarters.
In the booklet, Mr. Henderson used two maps from 1860 and 1875 to identify several of the mills, fords, and houses in the area. According to these maps, Ferguson’s Mill was located on the west side of the creek just north of what used to be the Factory Shoals Rd. bridge. The bridge I remember from the 1960’s has been demolished and removed, but the last time I was there a suspended bridge had been constructed for foot traffic.
If you are familiar with the area, you know that this site is directly downstream from what is now the dam for the East Point Reservoir. I remember being told that there was an old mill pond which was covered by the dam when it was constructed (I think in the 1960’s). I also know that a small hydroelectric plant was constructed on the site of Ferguson’s Mill (probably in the 1930’s) because it is part of a tour given by the Sweetwater Park staff. It is my understanding that the ruins you can see there now are the remains of the hydroelectric plant and that nothing remains of the original mill.
There is no other information in the booklet about the Ferguson Mill except the location. I do not know if the booklet is still available at the park, or not. If you are interested, I can try sending a scan of the map, but I am not sure how clear it will be.
