About the military service of H. K. W. (Harrison Kendricks or 'Hen'), there is some confusion:
The Roster for the 19th MS Infantry, Co. I lists H. K. W. Childress as a private. But the Roster for the 19th GA Infantry, Co. I lists H. K. Childress who had his (left) arm amputated after being wounded at Cold Harbor, VA June 27, 1862. Which 19th Infantry Co. I is it? I believe Mississippi, because of the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and he was probably mistakenly listed with GA after the family moved to GA. The other censuses are:
Census: 1860 Marshall County MS as "H. K. W." Tyro Township
Census: 1870 Marshall County MS Tyro Township
Albert W. CHILDRESS, his son, was my grandfather, and he was a Sr., having a son of the same name.
More about Elizabeth NEWTON, the great-grandmother of H. K. W. (Elizabeth NEWTON -> Moses BOX -> Orpha BOX -> H. K. W. CHILDRESS), who was also known as Wada-Missouri and named a daughter Wada Missouri, and was thought to be Cherokee. I believe she was Watota-Neutache, of the Otoe-Missouria 'tribe' and that NEWTON is an anglicisation of Neutache, the name Wada from Watota, or maybe Wada is a name in that language. The Otoe-Missouria for the most part joined the Cherokee people when they lost their land. Perhaps she was thought of as Cherokee because she was living with the Cherokee, spoke their language, and/or had been adopted by them.
Family history is that Edward BOX, her husband was Cherokee, having been captured and adopted by the Cherokee when he was eight years old. Anyone who knows more about this legend or can fill in details, please contact me.
H. K. W., was born in MS, his mother appears to have left TN around the time of the Trail of Tears and gone to MS where she gave birth to him. However, he had older siblings that he may not have known about, including a brother born a couple of months before his mother left TN. Some of his older siblings appear to have been enrolled on the Dawes Rolls, I am still researching this however. I believe the Cherokee CHILDRESS or CHILDERS in the Saline District circa 1880 are directly related to my family.
