Hello,
This message is for descendants of the Humphries family who lived in Douglas County, Ga. when it was founded in 1870. John W. and Amanda Maroney Humphries were early residents of Campbell county Georgia and their family stayed on when Campbell County became Douglas County. In spite of the fact that John and Amanda had a large family, and probably have descendants living in Douglas Co. today, there is only one post on this message board to date that mentions anyone in the family.
John and Amanda were married in Campbell co. Ga. on 9 April 1837 (Campbell Co. marriage records). They are listed in the 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses of Campbell Co. John died in 1879 and so does not appear in the Douglas Co. census of 1880, but Amanda is there with her son Joseph. John had a shoemaking business with his brothers Wiley, Merrell and Nathaniel Humphries at the New Manchester Mill on Sweetwater Creek. When the mill was burned by General Sherman in 1864, John and his wife and children, except for sons William and John Benjamin, were sent to Louisville, KY as prisoners of war. The family came back to Ga. after the Civil War was over.

William Henry Humphries b. 1845 m. Sallie Roach

Mary Humphries b. 1856 m. James "Ike" Strickland
Eugenia Viana Humphries b. 1859 m. William Gore
Georgia Humphries b. 1860 or 61 m. William Campbell
I have been able to determine where all of the children are buried except for Merrell and have enjoyed making contact with descendants of Sarah, John Benjamin, and Eugenia "Jennie."
My connection is through William Henry Humphries who was my great-great-grandfather.
DNA evidence supports the paper trail of this family back to the Humphries family that was living in Brunswick Co., Va. in 1738. This family was the subject of a book on the Humphries family written by Brent Holcomb. I can give more details if anyone is interested.
So here is at least a brief run-down on the family. I hope anyone who is related and trying to track down their Humphries family line will find this useful.
