Dear Carol:
I do not know if there is any assistance in the following information; but I hope that it can help you. While searching for information regarding my Davis Family of Chatham County/Effingham County, Georgia, and my Rice Family from the Old Barnwell District of South Carolina, I gathered information regarding the history of the founding of the Purysburgh/Purrysburg Settlement of South Carolina. It was settled by Jean Pierre Purry who brought a group of French/Swiss people to America and they settled in the area in South Carolina known as Purysburgh/Purrysburgh, S. C. You may wish to read the following:
"Transactions of the Hugenot Society of South Carolina, No. 39, Charleston, S. C., 1934, Baltimore Waverly Press, Inc., entitled: The Swiss Background of the Purrysburg Settlers. The now extinct Purrysburg Settlement lies along the Savannah River across from The Saltsburger Colony at Ebenezer (at Springfield, Georgia). From my memory, Purrysburg was not far from Hardeeville, South Carolina which is north of Savannah, Georgia. From some of my notes I made many years ago, I found a reference to the Estate of an Eli. Davis. It was a survey for a piece of land that lays "partly in the Village of Purysburgh on waters of Savannah River" and situated in Beaufort District of Parish of St. Peters (S. C.).There were other adjacent landowners listed. This was a survey for a Mr. John P. Raymond. I visited Purysburgh many years ago because it was mentioned by members of my family that it had some connection to my family history; but I have not ascertained a connection as yet. I am related to the Davis Family. I hope that it can be of some help to you. I grew up in this area.
Sincerely,
Carole Melson.
