YANCY TURMAN

I am looking for any information on a Yancy Turman who lived in Elbert Co, Ga. He was a witness to the will of William Bibb Key which was probated January 1837.

According to census records there are children in his household and no female of age to be his wife or mother of the children. The children's ages show they were born inside the 10 yr span of the census so it is possible he did marry and his wife died, he then remarried after a census and the 2nd wife died before the next census. This is all speculation on my part. I have been unable to find a marriage for Yancy Turman in Elbert Co. Clementine Turman listed on the censuses is my gggrandmother. Does anyone know if Yancy Turman was ever married, to whom, or if the children listed were left in his care due to deceased parents?

The 1840 Elbert County Georgia Federal Census shows a Yancy Turman as age 30-40 and the only person in his household.

The 1850 census has him b abt 1805 in Ga with these children in the household.
A V Turman 8 M
W Turman 6 M
E J 4 F
C Turman 1 F

The 1860 United States Federal Census lists 2 other children b between the 1850-1860 census
Home in 1860: Elbert District, Elbert, Georgia
Post Office: Fishdam
Household Members: Name Age
Y Turman 58 M (Yancy Turman)
A V Turman 18 M (Alfred V)
W Turman 15 M
E N Turman 13 F (Eliza [Elizabeth?] N)
C Turman 11 F (Clementine)
R Z Turman 7 M (Robert Z)
N M Turman 6 F (Nancy M)

The U.S. Federal Census Mortality Schedules, 1850-1880 lists a Yancy Turman
as:
Marital Status: Single
Place of Birth: Virginia
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1799
Age: 81
Month of Death: Jun
Cause of Death: Dropsy of the Chest
Place of Death: (City, County, State)
Wyches and Eliam, Elbert, Georgia
Census Year: 1880
***Also shows he had been a resident of Elbert County for 75 years.***

The death record lists him as Single and not a widower. If he never married, where did all these children come from?

Any information on Yancy Turman is greatly appreciated.
Hazel
