Article that appeared in the Gaffney Ledger newspaper, dated May 12, 1915. [ Gaffney , S.C.] CONFEDERATE VETERAN WALKING TO RICHMOND G.W. SHERAM, a Confederate veteran 76 years of age, passed through Gaffney yesterday about 1:00 oclock walking on his way from his home town, Forsyth, Ga. to Richmond, Va. where he expects to arrive by June 1st, in time to attend the Confederate reunion. MR. SHERAM, with long flowing white beard and hair, is hale and hearty and as active as many a man not half his age. He wears a soft felt hat and glasses and carries a walking cane and umbrella. He is following the route of the National highway. He left Forsyth on May 4 with the expectation of reaching Richmond, a distance approx. 600 miles , by the first of June. The old soldier, while in the city yesterday, stated that he averages 25 to 30 miles per day and that one day he made 36 miles. He says that he does not have to walk if he did not wish to, and that he will ride back after the reunion. Born in 1839, he served the entire 4 years of the war. He was a member of Company K, 53rd Georgia, under Captain J.M. Ponder, Sims Brigade, Kershaws Div., Longstreet's Corps. He was wounded 3 times during the war, all being flesh wounds so that he never came home on sick-leave. --- [ this is not my family, hope a family member will apprecite the article] Notify Administrator about this message?
